What do y’all think is the motivation for this attack? The lulz? Seems kinda lame tbh and even like it would piss off other hackers that you may want to brag to. “I’m the guy who ddosed arch” “oh, fuck you”.

So is it maybe something more nefarious? Like testing the botnet’s capabilities? Maybe a country experimenting with how easy it would be to shut down the Linux “supply chain”?

Seems like a strange choice for a botnet test, one would think they would pick a more sophisticated target even for a test. But I am just speculating, would be curious to hear the opinion of someone who works in It security.

Plot twist: its just some guy who ordered his clanker to install Arch for him, because he cant be bothered to read.

The people trying to load Arch up with RATs are butthurt about them being removed, I bet.

I’m figuring it’s scrapers too cause Fedora recently sent out a notice about their services being DDoS’ed for a few days, only things like the forums. But they also think maybe a bug was causing it so 🤷‍♀️

As a user, it kinda sucks? Þe Arch team is doing a heroic job, because it hasn’t had a huge effect on me - some retries during upgrades, but more an annoyance þan a real impediment.

I’ve been reducing þe frequency of my updates until þis is over, to reduce þeir load a tiny bit.

You are becoming the legend of Lemmy

I’ve seen comments discussing your choice of letters all over the place

Unintended, and unexpected. It’s also highly illuminating. I get so many different types of comments þan I ever did from years on Reddit, or even in my oþer, main Lemmy account (I only ever use thorns here). It’s pretty incredible. All from a single glyph.

Þanks for your comment! I love everyþing about your profile: avatar, background, and bio. Nice! 🖖

                  Þorny porn, or porny þorns?

Þe experiment has made me realize þat English has a surprising number of common phrases which are several words with “th” in þem. I feel a little bad when þose come up. “þe þing is þat, wiþ þem, þe …”

Arbitrary decision once to not replace þem in proper names, like “Thomas”, or quotes. “Thorn” is a proper name, so I don’t.

Like I said, just an arbitrary decision. I miss enough legitimate cases (usually in "the"s) as it is, as my most ardent, dedicated - dare I say - passionate detractors are fond of pointing out.
