for background, I shaved my forearms for practicing methods of shaving my legs. low-key a mistake, don’t think id recommend shaving arms lol
I picked up a pizza after getting a shower and to dry out my hair faster I didn’t turn on the AC, was in a hot car in Florida for like 5m while it cooked and this is what happened. Pretty cool!
Edit: also it’s interesting to visualize how much water is lost when you sweat
Probably the USA…
Could’ve been a holiday but I don’t see anyone wanting to visit there on holiday until 2029. Commenter also asked for country.
Florida is in the USA, which a country (for now, anyway).
I’m aware.
The land of the free of thought
That’s by far the pettiest shit I’ve seen today.
Banning someone for a sidebar rule violation? You’re lucky to be so privileged - most of us have to deal with far, far worse behavior from people. And those of us in positions of authority, such as moderators and instance admins, have to do so with tact. I’d envy you if I had the time.
Have a day. 🫱
Why the fuck would I be following the rules of another instance I’ve never heard of and that I’m not responding to a post on? Reading your replies to everyone leads me to double down on my original comment although maybe this is hateful to non-keyboard warriors who touch grass and have jobs…
😆
Cute clip! I loved Firefly.
However it doesn’t refute my statement. Thank you
Oh hell yeah. Ban me too, fuck the USA.
Well, they’re not a mod here. I’m one of the poor saps with that role. Is… Is that what you want…? That’s not even a rule here.
Nah, I’m asking to be banned from the instance they do moderate, lmao.
Well, have fun, I guess?
Why “fuck the USA” ? Many citizens of the US are suffering despite doing everything in their power to oust the fascist regime in power. Do you really hate those people? They did nothing to you.
Let’s have a dialogue. Explain yourself.
I live in America. The USA is a disgusting fucking country who brings suffering on the world.
We’re not arguing about the validity of our opinions. What a waste of time that would be! :) All opinions are valid.
What we’re arguing is whether the banned user’s post constituted a sidebar rule violation of my instance (it did) and whether or not it was considered a bannable offense (it was).
Yes, I live in the USA and I hate myself. Easy answer.
Do you hate people of your same gender?
Do you hate people of your same religious/atheist beliefs?
Do you hate people belonging to your family?
Why would you hate your fellow citizens just because you share a relationship with them?
Ooooh, I especially hate the people in my family. They’re such assholes. My mother told me once that she regretted not aborting me, so I don’t see why I’m in the wrong for hating her back.
I’m wondering if your hatred of strangers is a symptom of poor parenting. Have you spoken to a professional about this?
Oh, it’s not just poor parenting. I was also raised religious, and they taught me that god hates everybody too. Humans are inherently sinful, and we all deserve to die horrible deaths and be tortured for eternity because we pissed off god. And that goes double for non-cishet people like myself, who the church wanted publicly executed because that’s what it says in the bible. I decided to be homeless at 19 because I thought my stepdad would follow the biblical rules about me getting raped, and beat me to death. The majority of people in this country claim to be the same religion, so that’s terrifying.
Then we’ve got our government telling me that I’m a ‘useless eater’ because I’ve got a brain tumor and can’t afford to monitor it without medicaid. The same government is talking about forcing me and people like me into labor camps. You can look at the voter numbers, the majority of people at minimum don’t care, because they didn’t vote. Most of the people who did care enough to vote, voted for this government.
I’ve been in therapy for a while, but I don’t understand why you think therapy will make me okay with being classed as subhuman in this country.
… How is this “hatred”?
This is the comment that got the user banned.
The contempt and hostility of the comment and the fact that it targets an entire demographic were the specific criteria which cost the user their membership here. Further, allowing it sets precedent for more such comments in the future. I’m not willing to tacitly endorse it by letting the user go with a warning.
Does that make sense?
Your sidebar rule explicitly talks about “hatred”. But I don’t see that at all in this comment. At worst it’s a critique of the US education system, which at this point I don’t think either side of the political spectrum is really happy with. It’s also well-known that the state of education differs greatly between US states.
If he commented something along the lines of “Probably the USA, because you have to be a moron not to know this”, I could see your point. But they didn’t. They didn’t even pass any value judgment about Americans at all.
It could even be a sarcastic reply, because the OP also posted what state they were from, so they “probably /s” are from the US.
I think you’re making a lot of assumptions about this user and their mindset when they wrote this comment. As you’ve seen from the immense feedback you got, the vast majority of users heavily disagree with you that they violated the sidebar rule. Being too heavy-handed on the moderation damages communities, it does not protect them.
In my opinion, this user should have been let off with a warning, and the comment should have stayed up because it requires a very subjective reading for it to come close to violating the sidebar rule. Alternatively you could have issued a warning and removed the comment if you want to err on the side of (excessive) caution. But a full ban was not appropriate.
Unsure if you’re referring to me or not but I’m from the UK :]
No I was referring to the OP, who stated they’re from Florida. Sorry if that was unclear.
No worries.
I can’t be any more clear than this: hatred towards a country is banned on my instance. It’s my call to make. You can point at the original comment and say, “that’s not explicitly called out as a hateful comment!” but that opens a can of worms I’m not willing to deal with. Any abuser can tell a marginalized Redlemmy user that they were just kidding, or there isn’t enough evidence to support the definition of “hatred” or whatever nonsense they want if we begin to allow this kind of toxic behavior.
Should my users have to endure snide comments about their gender? Their ethnicity? Then why should they be forced to tolerate it when it’s targeted at their country of origin? This is what’s best for my users. You’ve obviously found a home in a community that’s more tolerant of such bigotry. It doesn’t fly here.
Something else that doesn’t fly with me:
The feedback I’ve got was mostly unfounded, biased nonsense. Would you really give up a cause you believe in because a dozen people said it was wrong of you? Grow a pair.
And finally, if you don’t like my moderation style, pound sand. You can welcome hatred and bigotry on your own instance. Surely a member of “programming.dev” is capable of it.
I have no more time to donate to you. Have the day you deserve.
Your sidebar also says:
Yet here you are, telling another user who tried to give you constructive criticism to “grow a pair”, “pound sand” and that they’re “tolerant of such bigotry”. That doesn’t seem very respectful to me. You could also have addressed the criticism directly, but opted to instead misconstrue the argument and presented a slippery-slope fallacy.
If you’re not going to treat other users with respect, then that’s a block from me.
OP literally mentions they’re in Florida
Good catch! To be clear, this discussion thread pertains to banning a user for sidebar rule violation. Do you think that the fact that OP mentions being in Florida invalidates the violation?
Yes because you’re clearly projecting some feelings onto the guy you banned they clearly didn’t exhibit.
If you can’t be impartial in moderation, I suggest maybe taking a step back!
Moderation strategy is ultimately up to me, as I own the instance and administrate the mod team. I’ve chosen to protect my users as described in my About / Rules section, which I’ve succeeded in doing.
The fact that you would moderate differently doesn’t mean I’ve done it incorrectly.
But your suggestion has been considered. Thanks!
Nominative determinism at Wikipedia the free encyclopedia
This is some YPTB bullshit right here.
Umm… is the comment supposed to be removed?
They can’t remove a comment from a community that is not theirs. They can only remove it for members of their own instance (redlemmy.com).
That’s some pro-level PTB.
What a sad little martinet. Donny would be proud of you.
If you think I’m strict enough to be called a “martinet” then I’d recommend you don’t create an account on my instance. My sidebar rules are simple and clear, and the penalty for violating them is up to my discretion. If that’s not a strategy you agree with then I’d encourage you to start your own instance. Good luck!
There’s no danger of me starting an account in your empire of dirt, especially since I’ve blocked it entirely now. You’re quite the ambassador.
Good luck!
This only makes people go back to Reddit
I’m not concerned with Reddit as I don’t moderate it. :) I moderate my instance, and have had no complaints. Please understand that by banning hate speech, I’m keeping my users safe from it. I don’t care if you don’t like it; you’re welcome to host your own instance or create an account under someone else’s governance.
Banned from my instance. Please be a better person
Lifelong US citizen here. You need to chill with this. Learn to laugh at yourself and the US as a whole. We do some pretty stupid things.
I myself enjoy a chuckle as much as the next person.
But by letting users get away with nation-phobic behavior I’m setting a bad example for the rest of my users. I made it clear that targeted hatred isn’t welcome on Redlemmy.com, and now I’m standing by my promise.
Well, that’s a valid point. I retract my previous statement.
Ahh the Reddit mod has migrated to Lemmy. You should take your own advice and be better.
They violated front page sidebar rules of my instance, so I banned them. What part of the process do you disagree with?

i disagree with your priorities in life and the degree to which minute power makes you feel large
My priorities in life have nothing to do with this discussion. The topic is penalty for a sidebar rule violation. Please focus. Why do you disagree that banning someone for violating the rules of my instance should result in a ban?
