Remember when Pixar movies all had unique aesthetics? How the hell did every new original film end up turning into beanmouth slop. RIP Pixar. o7
Disney. They are the problem. Pixar used to be an independent studio until Disney bought it. They bought it in 2006 but a bunch of movies were already well into development (like Up). I believe Toy Story 3 was the first movie that Disney completely oversaw. Sure, there’s an occasional gem like Inside Out, but the issues started once Disney took over, rammed in sequels/prequels no one wanted, and gave up quality storytelling in order to make a profit. Bob Iger can get fucked.
I haven’t legit enjoyed a Pixar film since “Up”. That was 2009 now. Wow.
Brave was fine (2012). Same with Coco (2017). Pretty but predictable.
Yeah, Up was the last Pixar movie.
I feel like Luca and Elemental were produced with international audiences in mind. A lot of visual gags, simple language, basic plots, easy to translate, inoffensive stereotypes, etc. Coco was vibrant and fun with complex characters and a twisty plot. They even dropped in plenty of adult humor and mature themes.
Luca and Elemental had more of a Disney vibe to them. Up was the last Pixar movie to have that classic Pixar movie feeling to it.
Beanmouth slop
lol! Perfect descriptor of their aesthetic.
I thought Turning Red was awful (because it seemed to communicate the message that one’s culture is basically disposable in order to accommodate Western capitalism). Long gone are the days of masterpieces like Wall•E full of heart and charm.
