Hollywood is also running into an issue where streaming has killed the profit model for a lot of movies & TV shows and no one knows what the replacement will look like.
And Hollywood doesn’t have a problem getting talent for cheap. That’s part of the reason why so many productions are across North America.
The problem is that Rockstar is trying to make a new engine with modern graphics, when the industry has been moving away from the cutting edge because of costs.
Employees like this usually cost the company at least double their salary in support and benefits, so you’re probably talking about half that at most.
Along with that, there is probably a lot of R&D expenses as well.
Finally, Meta seems to be subsidizing the consumer hardware, so that’s probably hurting the bottom line even more.
The development of standards doesn’t have to be seen as capitalist, though. There are benefits for non-capitalist economies to define standards as a way to achieve interoperability across different devices. For instance, I don’t see why a communist country wouldn’t standardize a power plug.
But you’re going to get a lot of people who don’t want to be around Glassholes as all AR includes a camera.
You can?
S**t!
If an indie studio can produce this, why not create a AA CRPG? Do you really need the third A?
Yeah, I wouldn’t consider this a sign of recession. Instead, it is the confluence of various structural changes in the industry.
Because the industry was forced to work in a distributed manner, it has removed the location premium in a lot of salaries. Companies are firing high cost of living areas and hiring in lower cost of living areas.
Outside of cost of living, total supply for developers has increased significantly.
The return on investment for software development has either dropped or are starting to be included in more decisions. This is leading to development budgets getting slashed.
The incentive for consumer Linux is controlling the app store.
Google leverages its control of the app store to make money on Android. Valve has invested in Linux in order to have an alternate OS in case Windows becomes hostile.
Well, if you don’t need programmers to work in place place at the corporate headquarters, you can hire them anywhere.
There was a scene in a 70’s movie that James Cameron worked on that needed a computer animated tracking shot of a city. They couldn’t afford the computer time, so they put reflective tape on black painted blocks and manipulated the lighting levels to make it look like the shot was from a computer.
Maybe do more of that.
It is probably not looking for movies as big as Avatar.
A24 has been killing it recently with its small movie strategy, making a lot of bets on small movies that don’t break the bank.
If this was over a generation ago with how movies used to get released, I’d agree with you.
However, it feels like part of the fun of seeing something in a theater is that you’re watching something with others and you could watch it alone within a few months. With what I’ve read about RRR or the Taylor Swift Eras movie release, maybe theaters should let some screenings being audience participatory because there is more enjoyment with treating the movie as something to interact with instead of passively watch.
After all, you can passively watch a movie at home.
Outside of making a mess or trashing the place, I think movie theaters need to allow patrons to do more when watching a movie. The movie is going to go direct to video in a month anyway, why not let movie goers have fun?
It depends on the mess, but kids movies are always messy and theaters have the staff on hand to clean those kinds of movies, or can increase staff if necessary.
AAA used to be about creating fun games. The Super Mario and Mario Kart games, for instance, are AAA games.
It just happens to be that you can create a lot of complex and fun games today without pushing the edge of technology. That wasn’t always the case.
I feel like that with a lot of gaming, though. It feels like a lot of the industry has progressed where AAA gaming isn’t worth it while A and AA games are just as, if not more, entertaining.
It feels more like Nintendo is building the engine for the next decade, but I’m still happy with last decade’s engine.
Looks like they had to do something different than Mario Kart 8 and they did. The game looks interesting.
It isn’t interesting enough to buy, but then I figured I might sit this generation out.
And if India officially changes its name to Bharat internationally, Pakistan will totally change its name to India.
