It’s like the guy in a trenchcoat selling gas station drugs in a dingy back alley. Gets you hooked at the same price you’d get the “caffeine” pills from the station, then when you come back for more they’re suddenly 2-3× the price. It’s just good business.
Everyone I know who actually pays to play Jagex games acts like it’s meth or heroin…
Not trying to shame folk that do, but the only other times I’ve seen that level of video game addiction was early days WoW.
Ehhhhhh, what I said was partly hyperbole and partly very small sample size. My comment was not intended to imply a rigorous scientific study into the behaviours of paying Jagex players. I know 4 people who pay a subscription, all 4 spend all their free time either playing or watching other people play. It’s incredibly difficult to get them to talk about something other than what their character has been doing or they hope to be doing in the future.
pretty much everyone I know who plays osrs is extremely addicted, anecdotes of course but I’ve never seen anyone have a normal relationship with this game
Damn $32.50 a month for the full tier? That puts them way above every other MMO.
Jagex asks membership money per character.
WoW is cheaper and even gives you 60+ character slots.

It’s pretty far from that, but it is absolutely an abusive relationship and has been for some time.
