We have 3 theoretically identical systems here and this same issue occurs on 2 of them. The 3rd one… has bigger issues right now. That would be interesting to see what happens if I swap the Pis around but I’d give it >95% chance the same thing happens.
Largely for safety reasons, anytime the system is turned off power is instantly cut to the entire system. All of our CAN devices boot up much faster than the Pi does. Once the Pi boots, it sets up CAN communication.
The date/time aspect is an interesting thought. For a bit more context, this machine is a Raspberry Pi connected to several other devices, some via USB and some via a CAN network. The system gets powered on manually, the user performs a task, then shuts it down until they need it again. We only use the date/time for logging. The system is connected to our wifi at our facility but after we ship it then it’s likely it will never be connected to the internet except maybe when we’re servicing it and updating code. I don’t think the Pi has a RTC. I don’t really see how the date/time could be causing the issue I’m seeing (seems to be lag in communication with the devices on the CAN network) but I guess stranger things have happened.
Trying to reproduce a bug that consistently only shows up the first time we boot up our machines that day. Currently testing to see how long the machine needs to be off in order for the bug to show up again. I’m at an hour now.
Hey OP, I’m just starting my self-hosting journey as well. I can program a little bit in Python and C++ but I haven’t needed any of that so far. As others have said, some familiarity with Linux would be very helpful. The things I’ve done so far:
Eventually I plan to set up a NAS with Immich and some local IP cameras and Plex or something similar.
I use both, the only other distros I’ve used are Raspberry Pi OS and Raspbian. What am I missing out on? Ubuntu desktop seems fine to me, I’m hoping to transition all my machines to Ubuntu desktop before windows 10 EoL. Unfortunately I still have to keep a windows machine around, there are multiple pieces of software I need for work that are windows only.
Please don’t kill me I’m just a noob who doesn’t know any better.
Yeah… That’s how I initially got it to work on my pixel 6 pro. Since then they started supporting it.

Last time I checked there was a relatively narrow selection of phones the Dexcom app works with. Pretty much just iphone, galaxy, and pixel. I just checked again and there’s a lot more now, so maybe it’ll work?
It already only works on a pretty narrow selection of android phones. It seems like the Dexcom app is very picky.
I connect my glucometer (Dexcom G6) with my phone and I’m assuming lineage wouldn’t work with it.

OpenWRT is the most frequently recommended thing here, and my router is not supported. I somewhat recently purchased my router (Asus AX6600) when I switched to fiber due to its high bandwidth and I’d prefer to not replace it. I’ll look around and see what options I have for putting a separate device upstream of my current hardware and if that doesn’t work out then maybe I’ll replace my current router.
I see that you can install openwrt on a switch. Would it make sense to put a switch with openwrt upstream of my current router/AP?
Edit: dang there’s only 1 switch supported by openwrt that has 10 gbps ports (ZyXEL XGS1250-12)
He explains things pretty well, I definitely want to understand what I’m doing. I just prefer to have the knowledge consolidated into a single guide instead of searching for all the different components and maybe some things don’t end up working as expected.
Good point. I disabled the internet on both systems so when I come in on Monday hopefully I can confirm whether or not the date/time aspect is a problem. I’ll try this as well.
