The 4090 FE was doable in larger systems. But I really doubt a 5090 would fit in anything considered SFF. Even stretching the definition to the max.

Apparently the 5090 is the same length as the 4090, but only two slots. Maybe it’s taller but it’s hard to tell. That siad cooling the rest of your system will be much more of an issue with almost 600 watts getting blown around in there.

I was that way for the longest time. I was more than content with my 4 core 8 thread 4th Gen. i7 laptop. I only upgraded to an 11th Gen. i9 system because I wanted to play some games on the go.

But after I upgraded to that system I started to do so much more, and all at once. Mostly because I actually could, and the old system would cry in pain long before then. But Mid last year I finally broke and bought a 13th Gen. i9 system to replace it and man do I flog the shit out of this computer. Just having the spare power lying around made me want to do more and more with it.

Referring to it as “Oracles” brings a deep pain to me.

For a little bit there with 12th and 13th gen laptops it seemed like it could have made sense.

But then 100 and 200 series ditched that and the P series kinda merged with the H series and you have no idea what you’re getting.

My UPS at home just straight up won’t run off of another UPS unless it’s a perfect sinewave. Square wave REALLY makes it mad, and modified sinewave doesn’t work either. No matter what the UPS will refuse that power and only use its batteries.

I can’t find anything on their website about it being sinewave (pure or modified) so I’m going to assume it’s square wave. I’d imagine a high quality PSU found in a server will handle it, but it won’t be happy.

I don’t think half of our devs have even changed their wallpaper. They’ll set the UI to dark mode, and that’s about it for the OS. They’ll tweak their IDEs a decent bit, but OS wise they really don’t seem to care.

A good gui first interface is probably their main metric.

Linux is great for tinkering. But if you don’t want to tinker just change some setting it’s pretty awful. Every DE and their associated settings programs leave a LOT to be desired. Windows at least has only one (maybe two thanks windows 8+) ways to do anything and it’s well documented.

Command line? Yeah Linux is great. But most people want to avoid that at all costs.

Let’s be real here, the vast majority of developers are not the type of person to want to dig into the depths of their computer. Then just want something that works so they can write their code.

They may have started that way, but doing a hobby as your job will kill almost all interest you have in it.

Power (heat) modern (especially high end) CPUs and GPUs can see some impressive reductions in power with not too much of a hit to performance.

My 4090 underclocked basically as far as it will go draws about 200 watts under normal loads, 250-300 under pretty extreme loads. But the performance penalty is only like 15%

Normally when you want to save power in a desktop device you just throw a laptop CPU or GPU in there because those are tuned for better performance per watt…. Or just not an Intel CPU because AMD is so much better in that regard.

Not only that, but mid range cards just haven’t really moved that much in terms of performance. The ultra high end used to be a terrible value only for people who want the best and didn’t care about money. Now it almost makes sense from a performance per dollar standpoint to go ultra high end. At launch the 4090 was almost twice the performance of the 4080, but only cost about 1.5x. And somehow the value gets worse the lower end you go.

Meanwhile mid-high end cards like the 4060 and 7600 (which used to be some of the best values) are barely outperforming their predecessors.

They already do. My thinkpad T14s is incredibly thin, and it can dissipate 400 40 watts of power. My P1 dissipates 160+ watts and it’s also very thin.
