I’m a real dummy about modern video games. I was an OG gamer from the 80s, who spent the equivalent of a down payment on a house in quarters, playing Centipede at mall arcades. Later, I got into the early PC shoot-em up games like Quake, Quake 2, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, etc.

But I never got a game console, because I had recognized that I could have a serious problem with video game addiction. Eventually, I stopped playing altogether, especially after I started a business, and had to carve out time in my schedule, and video games and sports had to go. I didnt follow either for about 25 years.

Now I’m semi-retired, and would love to play those old games again, but I don’t really know how to do it on a modern PC. I actually have all my old CD-ROMs, but my computer hasn’t had a CD-ROM drive for years, and Im not going to buy a console.

Is there a way to download Quake and Quake 2, and my other favorites? Where do I go for that?

I know, I’m a gaming idiot, I just spent the last few decades focusing on other stuff.

If Disney had supported their star, instead of attacking her, she would have wanted to promote the movie.

I’ve seen that, and figured that was exactly the story. They even used a clip of the Willie’s whistled tune to lock that up, too.

They’ve had cocktails for years, that’s nothing new. I don’t buy them, because the only time I bought a beer in a movie theater, they charged me $12. That was pre-Covid. Its probably $18 now. How do they think that charging those predatory proces is going to entice people back to the movies?

With those predatory prices, I have no moral qualms with bringing in my own. I stop at Dollar Tree on the way to the theater, buy my snacks there (they have candy in noiseless movie boxes for $1.25 instead of $8), and sneak in those and a bottle of water. I’ve been doing that for many years, and nobody has ever said a thing. My son walks in with a tote bag full of groceries, and nobody ever stops him.

All three of these look pretty interesting.

I came to Lemmy and found out I wasnt alone, i was part of a bloodbath. I’ve seen posts from many people with 10+ year accounts who were banned. We’re the people who built that site, and made it what it was. Somehow we managed to be active for over a decade without a problem, but suddenly we all became violators in the same month, and need to be banned.

Now we find out Spaz wants to buy TikTok, AND The MuskRat threatened him. No doubt the threat was that if he had a prayer of being awarded the privilege of buying TikTok, he was going to have to obey, and violate Reddit’s foundational free speech mission. The classic Reddit is dead.

Miracle Mile (1988) - Streaming on Prime. About a guy who randomly meets a girl, and they have instant, love-at-first-sight chemistry. They agree to meet after she gets off work at midnight. Then he picks up a ringing pay phone, and listens to the wrong number panicking because a nuclear strike is about to hit LA in an hour. It becomes a race against time to find his true love, and escape before the bombs hit, as LA descends into PRE-apocalyptic chaos.

I worked for their music distribution division, WEA, in the 90s, and they had been the #1 record company in America for 25 straight years. It was a cool company to work for, and my dream job.

Then they let the accountants get control, and they started cutting costs. One of the first things they did was close a bunch of branches, and thousands of people, including myself, were out of jobs. Within a year, they had fallen to #4, out of the 5 major labels at the time, and they never recovered.

Now it sounds like the accountants have come up with the idea of selling off the catalogue that has literally defined the company for decades. Every Warner Bros division had its own mascot. WEA’s was the Raodrunner. Those cartoons and characters are the DNA of Warner Bros.

Never let the accountants make business suggestions or decisions. If upu own or run a company, and an accountant tries to make a suggestion, yell at them rudely, and tell them shut up and go back to their hole and count the money like they are paid to do. Nobody is interested in creative ideas from an accountant.

I habent seen anything like the bot action on Reddit.

I miss some great subreddits, especially a lot of cool guitar subs. I still look at them, but it does bother me that Im not able to give advice to new guitarists, or even tell luthiers how beautiful I think their guitars are.

Don’t feel bad, Reddit has been sliding for a long time. Lately, every thread started with dozens of bad puns, followed by Russian bots.

I used to visit certain subs just to out the Russian Karma Farmers. I got so good at finding them that finding them became almost a game. When I identified them, I would address them directly, I would identify them for everyone else in the thread, and make fun of their lame propaganda.

Then I would address their supervisor, and tell them that this guy was terrible at his job, that I clocked him within a few hours of his registration, and hed be better off at the beet processing factory. They would disappear almost immediately, with no pushback, confirmation they were frauds.

Lemmy has fewer people, but so far all we’re really missing is the worst of Reddit.
