I am curious if anyone with some legal knowledge can weigh in. My messy google search only pointed to one federal law, the FTC act, that would allow the FTC to intervene if a website breaks its own privacy policy. Otherwise US privacy laws are industry specific. (E.g. there is a set of laws for healthcare related data, HIPAA. There are other ones for some financial institutions.) So on a federal level they would have the FTC to worry about, maybe.

What complicates this is that multiple states have their own data privacy laws, and I don’t know what a company based in one state with data from users in other states has to do.

I feel like consoles are targeted at a section of the population that doesn’t value freedom over how they use their hardware. Locked bootloaders on consoles are technically not good, but it’s almost like it’s part of what defines a game console. If it really valued the users freedom, it’d just be a PC. The steam deck and similar devices are changing that idea though.

I feel like I need to learn VIM at some point because various system tools have a habit of using it. (rpmrebuild and the man pages come to mind) It just comes up here and there even if you don’t care for it.

This holds true for other companies using windows on handhelds, but Microsoft has the windows source code. I think this means that there is potential for Microsoft to make a version of windows that really works efficiently, but they’d have to had learned their lesson from windows phones.

He’s seemingly trying to create a suite of social networking and other tools. Maybe to compete with Google and the likes. Ambitious for sure. I don’t know if he’ll have any success given how Twitter is going.

It’s hard, but not hard enough from what I’ve been able to gather. We should want something better IMO. I’m surprised that TOTP isn’t more common.

Your last suggestion is basically what YouTube premium offers. I don’t think I would personally watch ads voluntarily, but I’ve seen similar systems in some games. Smite (at least used to) let you watch ads to get gems that you can use to buy cosmetics.

It’s not that bizarre. They don’t have to serve you the content without showing you the ads that make the platform profitable. The freedom goes both ways. I use an ad blocker too, but I don’t think that YouTube is really doing anything wrong here. (Other than possibly ruining their own platform, but that’s their problem that they’re making for themselves.)

Do you know about tape backup systems for consumers? From my (brief) search it looks like tape is more economical at the scale used by a data center, but it seems very expensive and more difficult for consumers.

Looks like it’s to lower activity for the holidays, which is a good move. Hopefully they don’t need all hands on deck for some kind of urgent issue until after the holidays are over.

There are pictures and ads in a newspaper. This is much more minimalistic.

Driverless cars can work if enough vehicles are replaced with them. I agree that a few driverless cars in a sea of regular drivers is not optimal though.

I’d rather a simpler phone at this point. I don’t think I’ve ever looked at my phone and felt that it’s too small. I can think of other ways that I’d want phones to be more functional, like connecting to external peripherals and a monitor.

Lots of people are excited about folding phones too though, so more power to them if companies are willing to go that way.
